As the nation’s largest community of independent pizzerias, it’s an honor to celebrate National Pizza Day with a retrospective of the past year in pie.

We measured the mozzarella, charted the crusts, and munched the numbers from millions of ’22 orders to see what’s new with everyone’s favorite food and the pizzerias that make it possible.

KEEP LOCAL THRIVING

🍕

KEEP LOCAL THRIVING 🍕

First things first:
Let’s talk pizza.

Every day is a pizza day, but data shows that there are some moments when we collectively want a little extra pep(peroni) in our step.

SPORTY SLICE

Pizza pairs well with sports, but which league scores the most game-day orders?

AWARD SHOWS

Glitz, glamour, and grandma pies: Only one award program got 21% more pizza orders than its closest competitor.

PIZZA PARTIES

Nothing brings people together like pizza — just make sure you know everybody’s stance on olives.

19.7% of orders were for two or more pies

DITCH DAY

Some people make the misguided New Year’s resolution of swearing off pizza. This is the day when they come to their senses.

January 13

Pizza is ever the crowd pleaser.

THE RISE

Salad was already jealous of pizza, and now it has a new, viscous reason. Ranch dressing is rising to the top of our favorite ways to pizza.

PREDICTED TRENDS FOR 2023

Roman-Style Pizza

When in Rome (or your local pizzeria), eat as the Romans do! We’re seeing an uptick in Roman-style pies: sauce and toppings right up to the edges of thin crusts.

Fun Fact: This style of pizza is traditionally priced by weight, like deli meat! Learn more from a Roman-style expert on our How You Slice It podcast.

Pickle Pizza

Here’s the dill: Pickle pizza went viral in 2018 and has steadily become a bigger and bigger favorite. This briney pie is most often baked with garlic sauce, topped with mozzarella, and dipped in ranch.

Fun Fact: Legend has it that a mother-daughter duo invented this pizza after a visit to the Pickle Festival.

What’s Your Vote?

Oh, So You Think Pizza Forecasting Is Easy?!

Pineapple pizza orders rose 76% in ’21, so we predicted the trend would continue into ’22. And…

6.1% fewer pineapple orders ’22

Its reign is over, but the war pineapple started will go on forever. Ashes to ashes, crust to crust.

As much as we love pizza, we love the people who make it even more. Slice exists to support all the indie pizzerias that make our neighborhoods stronger.

People want deliciously fresh pizza, not processed, predictable pies. There are more indie pizzerias in America than any brand of corporate pizza.

Nope, not a lottery jackpot — that’s how much customers tipped their beloved indie pizzerias in 2022. It’s a lot of money, and it’s wildly, wonderfully deserved. A massive cheese and thank you to neighborhood pizza shops.

Indie pizzerias don’t just make pies — they create jobs for the community. When you eat local pizza, you support the 213,898 people employed by neighborhood shops.

WE CALL UPON OUR FELLOW PIZZA PEOPLE

Now is our moment to meet and overcome the challenges facing independent pizzerias. And we will, as one people. One nation of pizza people.
